The core of Chattanooga's business activity is located in downtown with 62,906 jobs or 32.6 percent of the area's employment within three miles of downtown. That is more than any other metro area in Tennessee, Georgia or Alabama. Another 83,865 workers, or 43.5 percent, is between three and ten miles of City Center. In fact, our downtown is the only metropolitan city that can boast losing jobs in the 1980's and 1990's and then growing our job base double digits within the last decade. Over 3,800 firms, employing over 55,000 workers are located in our downtown.
Not only are the area’s largest banks, law firms and accounting firms located in the center of our city, we also boast a diverse and growing mix of manufacturing and service industries including BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Chattem, the world's first Coca-Cola bottling plant, Unum, Republic Parking and many more. Regionally, we boast Wacker, Amazon and Litespeed Bicycles along with a growing and exciting technology based business environment. In addition, Volkswagen Group of America completed a $1 billion production facility that serves as its North American manufacturing headquarters and announced in 2014 an additional $600 million investment and 2,000 additional jobs to produce their new SUV right here in Chattanooga.
